For all female students, Kerala's government offers menstruation and maternity leaves.
According to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday, menstrual and maternity vacations will be made available to all female students in all institutions under the state government's higher education department, marking a first for the country.
Vijayan tweeted and commented about the government's choice on his Facebook page.
He claimed that his administration's pro-women action was a first for the entire country and showed how committed the Left government was to ensuring gender equality in society.
"Kerala serves as a national example once more. Female students at all institutions managed by our Department of Higher Education will be given menstrual and maternity leaves, reiterating the LDF government's commitment to achieving a gender-just society "Tweeted he.
Even though menstruation is a normal biological process, he asserted that it is an extremely stressful and uncomfortable period for women.
The administration has thus decided to reduce the attendance requirement for female students by 2%, he noted in a Facebook post.
The state government has made this pro-women decision for female students in universities and colleges under the Higher Education department for the first time in the nation, he claimed.
He continued by saying that the department of higher education had also agreed to let pregnant female students who had attained the age of 18 a maximum of 60 days of absence.
In response to the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), which provides its students with menstrual leave, the government has decided to implement the same policy in all State universities that fall under the department's purview, according to Higher Education Minister R Bindu, who made the announcement on Monday.
The choice was made by CUSAT in response to a request from the university's SFI-led students' union.
In response to a long-standing request from female students, the university granted a two percent increase in each semester's allowance for absences on January 11.
